Self-Leadership: Tips for Navigating the Quarantine

Bill is a risk management executive who lives in York, PA, with his wife and two children (Liam and Joey).  Bill holds his bachelor’s degree from Penn State in Industrial Health and Safety, his master’s degree from Florida State in Risk Management and Insurance and is currently pursuing his Doctor of Organizational Leadership from Abilene Christian University, now working on his dissertation.  Bill has 18 years of experience in the insurance industry and holds the CPCU and ARM certification from The Institutes.  In addition to his insurance experience, Bill spent the Spring 2019 semester as a visiting professor in the Florida State Risk Management and Insurance Program.  In addition to his insurance career, Bill also teaches in the risk management program at the University of Baltimore and currently serves as Member-At-Large for the Society of Insurance Trainers & Educators (SITE).

Storm Wilkins, Esq.,CPCU, ITP

From a Distance- Tips for Effective Virtual Insurance Policy Training


Storm Wilkins, Esq., CPCU, ITP serves as the Executive Director of the Maguire Academy of Insurance and Risk Management at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia.  In the past, she was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Risk, Insurance and Healthcare Management at Temple University.  Since becoming a fulltime academic in 2013, Professor Wilkins has taught a variety of courses including: Property and Casualty Insurance Contracts; Introduction to Risk Management and Insurance; and Property and Casualty Insurance Operations.  She has taught undergraduate and graduate students in the United States, Morocco, China and Italy. 

 Professor Wilkins’ more than two decades of insurance industry experience include various roles with carriers including ACE (now Chubb) and State Farm. She also served as an Assistant General Counsel for AAA Mid-Atlantic Insurance Group.  She has considerable expertise in the areas of insurance contracts and regulation, litigation management, complex claims handling and corporate training.

Professor Wilkins earned her Juris Doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. She received her undergraduate degree cum laude from the American University in Washington, D.C.  She works with carriers in developing effective training through her consulting practice, Precedent Corporate Training, LLC.  Prof. Wilkins is a SITE member and has presented at past SITE conferences.

Insurance policies are the lynchpin of the industry.  It is what underwriters write, producers sell and claims handlers adjust.  The better your teammates understand your organization’s policies, the better they will be able to serve your customers.  Therefore, effective insurance policy training is critical. 

Covid has forced us all to work, learn and teach a bit differently.  The best policy courses empower the students to have not just the knowledge but, also the skill to effectively and confidently navigate insurance contracts.  While many of us engaged in online training prior to the pandemic; distance learning has increased and it has changed.  During this interactive session, attendees will share effective strategies for teaching policy analysis at a distance. 

We will address:

  • Hallmarks of good coverage training;
  • Counteracting Zoom fatigue;
  • Games coverage trainers play; and
  • Managing breakout sessions without losing control.


Kathy Bova, SBCS, ITP

Investing in your Staff - Offering professional development to all staff


Kathy started as a CSR in 1980, earned her Commercial Lines Specialists from Travelers school in 1984, and promoted in 1991 to Vice President of the agency.  In 2005 she took advantage of an opportunity with ASNOA, a fast-paced growing network, as the Commercial Lines Manager, and with her years of experience with Applied Systems AMS, quickly added the IS Trainer role in addition to the Commercial Lines Manager role.  In 2011 became Director of IS Training and Commercial Manager and in 2018 became the Vice President of Education, she earned her Small Business Coverage Specialist SBCS and Insurance Training Professional ITP designations and in 2020 and currently has been promoted to Vice President of Operations.

As Vice President of Operations at ASNOA her role shifted to use her experience and education to make decisions to oversee operations activities in the organization, ensuring development and implementation of efficient operations, cost effective systems to meet current and future needs of the organization.

With Kathy’s experience she designed, developed, and implemented a Small Business Commercial Lines course helping agents sell millions of dollars in commercial insurance since it began, she believes “knowledge does increase revenue” and “experience is the best teacher”.  She implemented an Intern program engaging students in the insurance industry showing firsthand it’s a great career choice that offers many levels of advancement and very rewarding at the end of the day, agents are helping people put back their lives together after a loss whether catastrophic or otherwise.
