How to Use Happy and Unhappy Incidents in Workflow Learning

Most learning programs and paths are prescriptions that cover “happy incidents.” These topics are standard, using familiar content for steps, procedures, policies and compliance. These are the norms - lessons that are predictable, known and accepted company practices. A good example of a happy incident is, “follow these 5 steps to get results.” Unfortunately, for every one happy incident, there are ten or more unhappy incidents. These include catastrophes, accidents, errors, violations, near misses, product defects, explosions, emergencies, etc. - the unknowns and the unexpected. These are real-world issues that learners and workers must respond to.

In Workflow Learning where learners must work and learn simultaneously, L&D and HR Departments must encourage elective learning. Learners should have the flexibility to explore and obtain answers from libraries of resources in order to find answers and solutions.

Workers deal with the unhappy incidents in Workflow Learning, too. They must be able to anticipate, prevent or resolve unhappy incidents at work. These occurrences are part of the day-to-day realities of being a productive worker.

In this session, you will learn how to :

•explore L&D and HR solutions to help learners deal with unknown and unpredictable workflow issues

•discover methods to identify, prevent and/or solve unhappy incidents

•review a Workflow Map that helps HR and L&D professions connect their learning resources

to impact work results

•explore a method on how to encourage learners to do trial and error, and experimentation to solve problems
