The 100-foot wide Washington and Old Dominion Railroad Regional Park (W&OD) is one of the skinniest parks in the commonwealth of Virginia, but also one of the longest — 45 miles in length. The W&OD takes its name from the railroad whose trains ran along the right-of-way from 1859 until 1968. The entrepreneurs who founded the rail line dreamed of bringing coal and other riches from the Appalachians to the Port of Alexandria, but those dreams were never fully realized. Less than a decade after it was built, the railroad was almost destroyed during the Civil War.
The first segment of the W&OD Trail was opened in 1974 within the City of Falls Church. This portion was built as the result of a special agreement with VEPCO under which the Regional Park Authority was allowed to judge whether a trail of this sort would prove to be popular. It did, and so, after the property was purchased, the trail was built in sections until its completion to Purcellville in 1988. Trail users today may enjoy 45 miles of asphalt trail and 32.5 miles of crushed stone and dirt bridle paths. In 1987, the W&OD was designated a National Recreation Trail by the U.S. Department of the Interior.
First Time Conference Attendee Continental Breakfast Networking Event
Time: 8:15 a.m. – 9:45 a.m.

Is this your first SITE Conference? If so, one of the most useful sessions for first time conference attendees is the “First Timers” breakfast. For most of us attending a conference, especially solo, takes some effort to get acclimated and connected. The purpose of the First Timers breakfast is to “fast track” your transition into SITE and learn how to make the most out of the conference. We encourage you to join us for a light breakfast, receive an overview of what to expect at the SITE conference and meet new and tenured SITE members. Last year we had over 60 attendees.  We look forward to meeting you this year.

Risk Management Tour #1: Pentagon Experience - SOLD OUT
Description:
What goes on inside of the Pentagon? How does a building that has three times the floor space of the Empire State Building, providing office space to over 23,000 people work in support of our National security. Join us on a special tour of the Pentagon. Along the tour route you will be exposed to the history and facts pertaining to the four branches of the military (Navy, Air Force, Army and Marine Corps). Gaze upon the memorial placed inside the Pentagon near the September 11th crash-site, along with the Memorial Chapel. Continue the expedition by viewing the names of all recipients of the Medal of Honor in the Hall of Heroes, as well as an up-close look at an actual Medal of Honor. These are only a few of the many exhibits you will see on the tour.
The program, under the purview of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs, hosts more than 100,000 visitors annually. The tour lasts for approximately 60 minutes and follows a route that is approximately one and one half miles in length. Each tour includes the mission of the Department of Defense and each of its branches of service, and visits numerous displays that highlight and depict significant moments in military history.
Headquarters of the Department of Defense, the Pentagon is one of the world's largest office buildings. It is twice the size of the Merchandise Mart in Chicago, and has three times the floor space of the Empire State Building in New York. The National Capitol could fit into any one of the five wedge-shaped sections. There are very few people throughout the United States who do not have some knowledge of the Pentagon. Many have followed news stories emanating from the defense establishment housed in this building. However, relatively few people have had the opportunity to visit.
The Pentagon is virtually a city in itself. Approximately 23,000 employees, both military and civilian, contribute to the planning and execution of the defense of our country. These people arrive daily from Washington, D.C. and its suburbs over approximately 30 miles of access highways, including express bus lanes and one of the newest subway systems in our country. They ride past 200 acres of lawn to park approximately 8,770 cars in 16 parking lots; climb 131 stairways or ride 19 escalators to reach offices that occupy 3,705,793 square feet. While in the building, they tell time by 4,200 clocks, drink from 691 water fountains, utilize 284 rest rooms, consume 4,500 cups of coffee, 1,700 pints of milk and 6,800 soft drinks prepared or served by a restaurant staff of 230 persons and dispensed in 1 dining room, 2 cafeterias, 6 snack bars, and an outdoor snack bar. The restaurant service is a privately run civilian operation under contract to the Pentagon.
Tour limited to the first 20 attendees who register for this tour -

Risk Management Tour #2: Smithsonian Expedition
Expect the unexpected. Through a scheduled tour of the National Museum of American History, view the Star-Spangled Banner, Edison’s light bulb or even Dorothy’s Ruby Slippers! What happens behind the scenes, the making of an exhibit, and the facts about how many feet walk through the halls each year to name a few. Housing artifacts, artwork and a tremendous representation of the nation’s history, the Smithsonian preserves moments in time like no other. Whether you are gazing upon the big whale in the Museum of Natural History . . . . or exploring the early days of flight while touring the Air and Space Museum, you will delight in the amazing preservation of history, the archives of days gone by and the innovation and education that brought us to where we are today.
Since the Smithsonian is the world's largest museum and has 19 museums and galleries, you may prefer to wander to one or more of the other museums on your own. You do not have to stay with our group for the scheduled tour of the National Museum of American History. We will be providing a chartered bus that will drop everyone off at the Smithsonian Castle and then pick our group up at noon to transport everyone back to the hotel.

Cost per Person: $50

Risk Management Tour #3: U.S. Capitol Visitor Center and Tour
Do something extraordinary. Visit the United State Capitol. The Capitol is a symbol of the American people and our government, the meeting place of the nation's legislature. The Capitol also houses an important collection of American art, and it is an architectural achievement in its own right. It is a working office building as well as a tourist attraction visited by millions every year.
The Capitol is among the most architecturally impressive and symbolically important buildings in the world. The Senate and the House of Representatives have met here for more than two centuries. Begun in 1793, the Capitol has been built, burnt, rebuilt, extended, and restored; today, it stands as a monument not only to its builders but also to the American people and their government.
Your guided tour of the historic Capitol begins at the orientation theater with a 13-minute film, "Out of Many, One," which will take you on a journey through our country's struggle to establish the world's first truly representative democracy and introduce you to the magnificent building that houses our Congress. Once inside the historic Capitol, you will see the Crypt of the Capitol, the Rotunda, and National Statuary Hall. All tours begin and end at the Capitol Visitor Center.
The United States Capitol is a monument, a working office building, and one of the most recognizable symbols of representative democracy in the world. You are welcome to enter the building through the Capitol Visitor Center, located underground on the east side of the Capitol.
Time: Depart Hotel at 9:00am
